THE WORKSHOP
The first half of this one-day workshop will focus on the overarching, higher-order competences which practitioners need to use to guide the implementation of any mental
health intervention in a way that retains the essence of the protocol while adapting therapy to the needs of the individual clients.
Ten such competences or “meta skills” will be examined. Each will be defined, the evidence showing it produces better outcomes for the client summarised, the reasons why it
might produce better outcomes examined, and specific ways to utilise these skills will be described.
The second half of the workshop will take a deep dive into how these meta skills can be utilised, using the cognitive behavioural therapy protocol for perfectionism (CBT-P)
detailed by Shafran, Egan and Wade. CBT-P has been robustly examined and shown to improve mental health across a variety of indicators, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicidality. It is, however, unlikely that therapists will utilise the stand-alone protocol for a client presenting with a specific disorder. We examine how to apply the meta skills to “get the best out of both worlds” – using a disorder-specific protocol individualised with components of CBT-P.
The workshop format will be a mix of didactic and interactive exercises, utilising some video role plays to illustrate complex techniques. By the end of the workshop, participants should expect to:
1. Understand the meta-skills that guide more effective therapeutic practice.
2. Have a working knowledge of CBT-P.
3. Work more effectively with therapy non-negotiables in eating disorders.
4. Understand how to apply meta skills to any therapeutic modality.
